A two-time recipient of Missouri Southern’s Female Athlete of the Year, she also was a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-American selection in volleyball as a senior, and that same year became the first female in Missouri Southern history to be named an NAIA Academic All-American.

A Lionbacker Award of Excellence winner in 1985, she graduated as the Outstanding Physical Education Major at Missouri Southern in 1985.

At the time of her induction, Cunningham was teaching and coaching at Hickman Mills High School in Kansas City, Mo.
