Nuckolls Hits Back-To-Back Walk Offs As Lions Sweep Winona State

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Softball team competed in day three of the Teri Mathis-Zenner MIAA/NSIC Crossover Tournament against Winona State in the Lions final non-conference doubleheader of the season. Back-to-back walk-offs sealed a sweep for the Lions over Winona State. The Lions advance to 23-8 (3-1 MIAA) on the season.

Missouri Southern vs. Winona State - Game One
W, 3-2

The Warriors struck the board first with a bases loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. The Lions returned with a score on a wild throw and a Katie Gray sacrifice fly to give the Lions a 2-1 after three innings of play. The Warriors tied the game in the top of the fifth which kept the game tied until the bottom of the seventh inning. Taylor Nuckolls sent a shot into right-center field which scored Kylee Jacks for the 3-2 walk off victory.

Kara Amos (5-1) picked up the win for the Lions and pitched 0.2 innings and gave up zero hits and zero runs in the seventh that led to the walkoff.

Missouri Southern vs. Winona State - Game Two
W, 1-0 /8 inn.

Both defenses were sharp throughout the entirety of the game. The Lions defense left eight Warrior runners on base throughout the first seven innings of play and did not allow a single run, but could not score on the offensive end which resulted in extra innings. The Lions defense was perfect in the top of the seventh, going three up and three down and left the placed runner on second on base as the Lions had a chance at another walk off opportunity. Kylee Jacks got the inning started with a single that brought Adrianna Young to third. After a intentional walk on Yazmin Vargas, Taylor Nuckolls hit her second walk off of the day with a shot to left-center field to bring in Young as the Lions got the 1-0 win in extras.

Kara Amos (6-1) picked up another win for the Lions and pitched all 8.0 innings and gave up six hits and zero runs while striking out three of the 31 batters that she faced.

The Missouri Southern Softball team will be back on the road to continue MIAA conference doubleheader action at Rogers State on Friday, March 22 at 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, followed by Northeastern State on Saturday, March 23 at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
