Lions Home-Opener Ends In Sweeping Fashion

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Softball team hosted their home-opening doubler-header on Tuesday, February 27 against the Lady Statesmen of Delta State. The Lions swept the Lady Statesmen, not allowing a single opposing run to cross the plate in both contests. The Lions advance to 13-4 (0-0 MIAA) on the season.

Missouri Southern vs. Delta State - Game One
W, 5-0

The Lions got started on their home field quickly with a Taylor Nuckolls RBI single that drove in Kylee Jacks to take a 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Lions took advantage of Lady Statesmen errors in the second, scoring three runs on fielding errors and a wild pitch to take a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Lady Statesmen could not answer, but the Lions were able to score another run on a fielding error in the sixth inning that ultimately won the Lions the game, 5-0. The Lions defense was huge, only allowing three hits the whole game.

Kiki Pickens (5-2) picked up the win for the Lions and pitched all 7.0 innings and gave up only  three hits and zero earned runs while striking out four of the 24 batters she faced for the complete game.

The Lions began the second game with a Taylor Nuckolls triple that she scored on after a passed ball from the outfield in the first inning. The Lions followed with a huge second inning, scoring 10 runs on a 3-RBI homerun by Hannah Duin, 2-RBI single from Taylor Nuckolls, RBI single from Carsen Tinkler, 3-RBI double from Abby DeSanto and a RBI bunt from Adrianna Young. The Lions defense continued to control the day, not allowing the Lady Statesmen to return any of the runs as the Lions went on to win in five innings, 11-0.

Avery Tallman (3-0) picked up the win for the Lions and pitched all 5.0 innings and gave up five hits and zero earned runs while striking out three of the 20 batters that she faced.

The Missouri Southern Softball team will stay in Joplin and play host to Truman State for a non-conference double-header on Saturday, March 2 at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM in Pat Lipira Softball Complex.
