Joplin, Mo. -- Missouri Southern junior thrower
Junior Joseph broke the Missouri Southern weight throw record as the men's and women's track and field teams competed today at Lion Invite inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Joseph won the weight throw with a provisional distance of 64-07.00, breaking the previous record held by Arley Smith by more than three feet.
Bryan Burns also threw a distance that would have broken the record as he placed third with a provisional mark of 62-07.75. Joseph's throw is currently the eighth-best mark in Division II, while Burns' mark is 12th-best.
Morgan Smith also broke a record as the junior broke her own 60m hurdles record by qualifying first with a provisional time of 8.68.
Rachel Ray also qualified for the finals in the hurdles with a time of 9.54.
Tiffany Gilford qualified first in the 60m dash with a time of 8.02, while
Destiny Akannam won the 200m dash in a provisional time of 25.33. Smith was second in the 200m, while
Ronise Miller and Gilford placed fifth and ninth.
Gilford was third in the long jump with a distance of 16-09.50, while
Sierra Barrett was fourth with a distance of 16-08.75.
Halee Cashio was second in the weight throw with a distance of 51-08.50.
Allie Heckemeyer was second in the pentathlon with a provisional total of 3,407 points. Heckemeyer won the long jump, while placing third in the 800m over the course of the five events.
In men's action,
Keson Payton and
Dausen Gourley both qualified for the finals of the 60m, while Gourley was third and
Thomas Hawkins was sixth in the 200m. The DMR team of
Tyler Rush,
Matt Willis,
Cristobal Renteria and
Vincent Kiprop placed second with a provisional time of 10:04.02, while
Kyle Parr placed tenth in the heptathlon with a total of 2,391 points.
Jordyn Manier was second in the long jump with a distance of 22-10.75, while
Brendan Watkins was fourth and
Mike Watson and
Cody Vogt placed 10th and 15th.
Four Lions also competed in the 5k at Pittsburg State as
Christian Provence was fourth and
Cynthia Torres placed 11th in the women's race, while
Cody Berry and
Mike Shanahan placed 22nd and 23rd in the men's race.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow with the conclusion of the meet.
