Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team swept visiting Southwest Baptist University three sets to none at Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 25-22, 25-17 and 25-20.
The Lions (5-22, 2-12 MIAA) were led by
Christina Perlinger with 11 kills and four digs.
Alicia Pickett had seven kills and hit .462, while
Sydney Dose had five kills and 13 digs.
Bailey Rexford,
Monica White and
Mikayla Monk had four kills each.
Kat Gries had nine digs, while
Whitney Harrison and
Katie Paine had 18 and 12 assists, respectively.
SBU (3-25, 0-14 MIAA) was led by Dana Neal with eight kills, while Serna Mar had 21 assists.
The Lions opened the first set on a 6-3 run, but SBU stormed back to tie the set at ten apiece. The Bearcats took an 11-10 lead and led 19-14 later in the set. Harrison served five straight points to get the Lions within one at 20-19, and forced an SBU timeout. The Bearcats led 22-20, but Gries served five straight points to get the Lions the opening set win.
Set two saw the Lions get out to an 11-6 lead forcing an SBU timeout and the Lions led 18-10, forcing another Bearcats timeout. The Lions closed out the set to go up 2-0.
SBU jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in set three, but the Lions climbed back and tied the set at nine. Harrison served four-straight points to put the Lions up 13-9 and an ace by
Bridgette Jaeger made the score 16-10, forcing an SBU timeout. The lead was 20-15 late in the match, but the Bearcats made a comeback, to get within two at 20-18, but the Lions scored five of the final seven points to take the match, capped off by a block from White.
The Lions will be back in action this Friday when Southern plays host to Central Oklahoma. First serve is set for 6 pm.
