Pittsburg, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell three sets to none tonight in MIAA action at Pittsburg State. Individual set scores were 20-25, 21-25, and 22-25.
Southern (4-16, 1-6 MIAA) was led by 12 kills and nine digs from
Bailey Rexford. Rexford hit .281 in the match, as well.
Alicia Pickett had eight kills and three blocks, while
Kat Gries and
Bridgette Jaeger had nine digs each.
Whitney Harrison dished out 17 assists, while
Katie Paine had 14.
PSU (4-15, 2-5 MIAA) was led by ten kills from Maggie Highberger.
The first set featured eight tied scores and two lead changes. Southern had a 7-6 lead early on, but Pitt went on a 6-3 run to lead 12-9 and force a Lions' timeout. After the Gorillas led 22-15, the Lions reeled off four-straight points to get within three at 22-19 and force a PSU timeout, but the Gorillas held on for the win.
In the second set, Pitt led 12-6 and again 18-10, but the Lions got within five at 21-16 to force a Gorillas' timeout. The Lions got to within three late (24-21) but couldn't get any closer.
In the third set, Southern trailed 13-8, but scored three-straight points to get to 13-11 and force a PSU timeout. The Lions scored a point out of the timeout and got within one at 13-12. Southern would tie the set at 17 and 18, and trailed by one at 21-20 late, but couldn't get any closer as Pitt closed out the match.
The Lions will be back in action on October 14 as Southern plays host to Central Missouri. First serve from Young Gymnasium is slated for 7 pm.
