Lions Hang Tough With #16 Central Missouri

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Volleyball team took set one, but couldn't quite finish out the match, falling in four sets tonight at home to 16th ranked Central Missouri. Individual set scores were 25-20, 15-25, 21-25 and 14-25.

Southern (4-17, 1-7 MIAA) was led by Bailey Rexford with 12 kills and nine digs. Alicia Picket had seven kills and hit .583, while adding four blocks. Bridgette Jaeger led the team with 12 digs, while Katie Paine and Whitney Harrison had 20 and 18 assists, respectively. Kat Gries and Paine had eight digs each.

Central (15-6, 4-4 MIAA) had two with double-figure kills as Kylie Holen had 11 and Molly Lawrence had ten.

In the first set, Central got out to a 12-6 lead, but an 8-4 run by the Lions cut the Jennies' lead to just two at 16-14 and forced a Central timeout. A 7-3 run by the Lions coming out of the timeout paced by back-to-back kills from Monica White forced another Jennies' timeout. The Lions scored four of the final five points to take the opening set.

Southern hit .242 in the first set and limited the Jennies to just a .034 attack average in the set.

The second set featured just one tied score and the Jennies never relinquished the lead to take the second frame.

The third set saw the Jennies open up a 19-10 lead, but the Lions scored 11 of the next 15 points to make the score 24-21 and force a Central timeout. The Jennies, however, scored the point out of the timeout to take the set.

The Jennies opened up an 11-4 lead to force a Southern timeout. The lead reached 20-11 late and the Jennies closed out the match on a 5-3 run.

Southern will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Lions play host to Lindenwood. First serve from Young Gymnasium is set for 1 pm.
