Prior to Southern
Groothuis played varsity soccer at Sachse High School in Texas from her sophomore through senior years, serving as team captain her senior year. She earned All-District First Team honors as a senior and All-District Second Team laurels as a junior. Two-time Academic District and Academic All-State as a senior. She registered 12 goals her senior season and 17 as a junior.
