Women Take Second; Men Finish Third at Southern Stampede

JOPLIN, Mo. – Missouri Southern women's cross country placed second while the men's team took third at the 36th annual Southern Stampede Saturday at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course.
 
The MSSU women totaled 79 points for second overall in the 5K behind Pittsburg State (64). Lilah Genel paced the squad for the second-straight meet, crossing the finish in 17:48.25 for seventh overall Saturday. All five of the Lion scorers placed in the top 21 and were medalists.
 
The Southern men finished third out of 26 teams in the 8K, totaling 99 points behind Hutchinson Community College (49 points, first) and Pittsburg State (60 points, second).
 
Jaden Deaton who earned MIAA Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Sept. 9, once again led the Lions, taking fourth overall in a personal best 23:46.27. Chase Sorrell also medaled with a PR mark of 24:53.11 for 22nd.
 
MSSU next heads to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival on Oct. 4 at Agri Park.
