Southern Halted in Game One Against Fort Hays

Hays, Kan. – The Missouri Southern baseball team traveled to take on the Fort Hays State University Tigers in game one of the series. Southern would get on the board late in the game, but Fort Hays held their lead to take game one, 11-7.

Fort Hays State took an early 7-0 lead in the first inning and went on to add runs in the second, third, and sixth innings.
 
In the sixth inning, Missouri Southern began to shift momentum, scoring two runs. Chayton Beck led off with a walk, followed by a single from Drew Townsend. Ethan Clark was hit by a pitch, bringing in a run, and Jacob Filip singled to right field, adding another score and closing the inning at 10-2.
 
Chayton Beck and Drew Townsend both singled, setting up Brayden Luikart to drive in Beck with a single down the first base line. Ethan Clark hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Townsend to score, bringing the score to 10-4 in the sixth inning.
 
In a late rally during the ninth inning, Drew Townsend and Brayden Luikart each singled, setting the stage for Ethan Clark, who homered down the right-field line. This three-run shot narrowed the gap, but the game concluded with the Tigers securing the win, 11-7.
 
Drew Townsend went 3-for-5 with three hits and scored three runs. Brayden Luikart went 2-for-4 with two hits, scoring an RBI, and had a walk. Ethan Clark went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a hit-by-pitch for five RBIs. The Lions tallied nine hits.
 
Cole Gayman started for the Lions and pitched 0.2 innings. Brandon Overman pitching 1.1 innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out one. Lane Chapman pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one run on one hit. Alex Baker was efficient in his inning of work, striking out two without allowing a hit or walk. Kaylor Darnell also pitched one scoreless inning, surrendering one hit. Cole White delivered 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out four, and allowing just one hit.
