Gray Sets MSSU Single-Season Home Run Record in Sweep Against Northeastern State

Tahlequah, Okla.– The Missouri Southern Softball team takes on the Northeastern State University RiverHawks in a conference matchup. In game one, the Lions would take an early lead in the first inning, the score evened up, and an eighth-inning four-run rally secured the win for Southern. In game two, Southern gained the advantage in the third and held it for the game.
 
Katie Gray shatters the MSSU single-season home run record, surpassing the previous mark of 11 set by Leighton Withers in 2023 and Sarah Williams in 2016 with her 12th homer of the year in game one.

Game one: Missouri Southern 8 | Northeastern State 4
Southern opened the game strong in the first inning, scoring three runs. Bailey Dillon singled, then stole both second and third base. Kylee Jacks drove in Dillon with a single, followed by Katie Gray's two-run homer to right field, bringing the score to 3-0.
 
Northeastern State responded with one run in the bottom of the first, closing the gap to 3-1.
 
In the fourth inning, the Lions extended their lead. Lily Rand, pinch running for Easton Walter, scored after Bailey Dillon's single to center field, making it 4-1.
 
The RiverHawks briefly closed the gap, scoring three runs in the sixth inning to make the score 4-4. The game would go into extra innings.
 
Southern responded in the eighth inning. Emma Mason doubled and later scored on a bases-loaded walk by Taylor Nuckolls following an RBI groundout by Kylee Jacks. Katie Gray capped the scoring with a two-run single, which secured a final score of 8-4.
 
Bailey Dillon added three hits and three stolen bases. Katie Gray registered a home run and a double, contributing four RBIs and three hits. Kylee Jacks had a hit and two RBIs. The Lions tallied 14 games.
 
Kiki Pickens pitched 7.0 innings and recorded six strikeouts and issued just one walk. Lauren Fuller contributed one inning of relief, facing three batters without allowing a hit or a run, with all outs coming via groundouts.

In the third inning, Southern broke the deadlock with Bailey Dillon hit by a pitch and then showcased her speed by stealing both second and third bases. Kylee Jacks brought Dillon home with a sacrifice fly. Shortly after, Jacks scored on a passed ball, extending the lead to 2-0.
 
The Lions added three more runs to their tally in the sixth inning. Kate Thurman doubled to center field, followed by Peyton Hawkins's double, which scored Ashlyn Hulett, who was pinch running for Thurman. Later, Cady Dickey singled to center field, driving in two additional runs, with both Hawkins and Dillon crossing the plate. Southern led 5-0.
 
The RiverHawks managed to score their only run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
Southern's defense held and secured the victory with a final score of 5-1.
 
Bailey Dillon made an impact with four stolen bases and two runs scored. Cady Dickey excelled in a pinch-hitting role, driving in two runs with her only hit of the game. Peyton Hawkins added two hits, including a double, and collected one RBI while scoring a run.
 
Avery Tallman pitched a complete 7.0 inning game, struck out four batters, and walked one, facing 28 batters.
