Arkadelphia, Ark. - The Missouri Southern Softball team continued their 2024 season in Arkadelphia, Arkansas on February 3rd to compete in day 2 of the Ronnie Hawkins/Mike McGhee Memorial Tournament. The Lions battled with the Reddies, but a 10 run rally in three innings was enough for the Lions to win their only matchup of the day over Henderson State, 12-7.
Missouri Southern vs. Henderson State
W, 12-7
After two run-rule victories the day before, the Lions had a tougher matchup against the Reddies of Henderson State. The Lions jumped out quickly to a 1-0 lead at the top of the first inning with a
Taylor Nuckolls single driving in
Yazmin Vargas. The Reddies returned with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1 after one full inning.
Kara Amos began the second inning with a solo homerun over the left field fence, but again the Reddies matched the Lions with a homerun of their own, tying the game at 2-2 after two innings.
After the Reddies added a run in the third inning, the Lions began to jump ahead in the fourth.
Madison Grimes was able to reach home on an error to begin the inning.
Kathryn Flowers followed the error with a single down the left field line, driving in
Kylee Jacks who had reached third on the previous throwing error. After
Reese Davis singled to shortstop, a wild pitch brought in
Peyton Hawkins who was pinch running for Flowers.
Adrianna Young added to the Lions lead with a double to left field, driving in Davis to bring the Lions lead to 6-3 at the top of the fourth.
The Reddies were able to add another run in the fourth inning, but the Lions got right back in the action in the fifth. Multiple defensive errors and wild pitches by the Reddies gave the Lions all four of their fifth inning runs to bring their lead to 10-4. The Reddies were not done rallying, adding two runs in the fifth inning. The Lions returned the favor with two runs of their own in the sixth with a
Katie Gray RBI double and a wild pitch bringing in
Maddie Rolfs as the Lions continued to lead, 12-6.
A single run by the Reddies was not enough as Missouri Southern won their third straight game, defeating Henderson State 12-7.
Avery Tallman (2-0) was credited with her second straight win this season, relieving
Kiki Pickens in the fourth inning and only giving up one earned run while striking out a batter in one full inning pitched. Pickens, Allman and
Lauren Fuller combined for nine strikeouts in the win.
