Southern Women Finish First, Men Second At 2021 MIAA Championships

Pittsburg, Kan. - The Missouri Southern track and field programs concluded the 2021 MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships today, as the women won their first Outdoor Championship since 2010 and the men finished in second.
 
After finishing day one with 65 points, the Southern women continued to pour it on finishing with 145 points, 15 points in front of second-place Central Missouri.
 
The men began day two with 54 points and finished with 137 to place second behind Pittsburg State who finished with 172.50 points. 
 
In total, the Lions had 28 All-MIAA performances between the two teams and ten event wins.
 
The first win of the day for Southern happened when the women's 4x100 meter relay team of J'Zaria Cartwright, Jasmine Deckard, Cornesia Calhoun-White and Chardae Overstreet finished with a time of 46.85, the fifth-fastest time in school history.
 
Adrain Broadus won the men's triple jump with a leap of 15.75 meters, the third-best jump in school history. Taris Jackson just missed out on an All-MIAA spot finishing fourth with a jump of 14.97 meters but it was an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark.
 
Rajindra Campbell picked up his first win of the afternoon in the men's discus with a throw of 58.02 meters, the fifth-best distance in school history, and an NCAA Automatic Qualifying Mark. Peyton Barton picked up All-MIAA honors in the event, as well, finishing second behind Campbell with a throw of 54.87 meters, good for an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark.
 
Campbell picked up his second win of the afternoon this time in the men's shot put with a throw of 19.80 meters, breaking the school record for the fifth time this season. The throw is an NCAA Automatic Qualifying Mark to go with being the farthest throw in the shot put this season in Division II. Josh Fulmer (16.39 meters) and Elijah Smith (16.37 meters) had NCAA Provisional Qualifying Marks in the men's shot put as well finishing eighth and ninth.
 
Ryan Riddle got the win in the men's 1500-meter run with a time of 3:45.99, which is the third-fastest time in school history and an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark. Precious Olatunji won the women's 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.03 and Cornesia Calhoun-White picked up All-MIAA honors as well, finishing third with a time of 14.10. Olatunji and Calhoun-White's times are NCAA Provisional Qualifying Marks.
 
Payton Roberts won the women's discus with a throw of 51.07 meters, the tenth best throw in school history, and an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark. Kirsten Leisinger earned All-MIAA honors in the women's discus finishing second behind Roberts with a throw of 49.00 meters that was also an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark.
 
Roberts was second in the shot put with a throw of 14.84 meters, to earn All-MIAA honors in the event. Kelie Henderson picked up All-MIAA honors in the women's 1500-meter finishing third with a time of 4:37.78.
 
Jasmine Deckard was All-MIAA in the women's 100-meter dash finishing third with a time of 11.69, the sixth-best time in school history and an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark. Deckard was fourth in the women's 200-meter dash but came away with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 24.25 missing out on All-MIAA honors by 0.03 seconds.
 
Brieon Randle finished second in the men's 400-meter dash and earned All-MIAA honors with a time of 48.51. JP Rutledge picked up the Lions 15th All-MIAA honor of the afternoon, finishing second in the men's 5000 meters run with a time of 14:37.94. 
 
The Lions will be in action weekend at Nebraska-Kearney before competing in the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships at Grand Valley State on Thursday, May 27th through Saturday, May 29th.
