Lions Complete Sweep Of Lopers With 12-2 7-Inning Game

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team received a stellar pitching performance from Zach Litchen today as the Lions completed the three-game sweep of Nebraska-Kearney, winning a 12-2 run rule getaway game.

Southern (11-7, 4-2 MIAA) got six strong innings from Litchen who struck out 11 and walked just two, while allowing no earned runs to move his record to 1-1 on the season. Will Bausinger threw a scoreless seventh inning.

Max Hogan went 3-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Dave Prost went 2-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, hitting home run number 5 of the season. Brett Graham went 2-4 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Walker Whitworth went 1-4 with three RBIs, while Tyler Sutherland and Cory Canterbury drove in a run each.

UNK (7-8, 0-3 MIAA) got two hits from Ricky Trammell.

Southern started the scoring with a six-run second inning. Graham's home run started the scoring, and Whitworth drove in Todd Hinkley. A sacrifice fly from Sutherland drove in Canterbury, while Prost scored on an error on the play. Alec Alvarez scored on a wild pitch and Hogan tripled, scoring Sutherland.

The Lopers added an unearned run in the top of the third, while Prost's two-run homer in the third, put the Lions up 8-1 after three. Hogan added an RBI double in the fourth, before UNK scored another unearned run in the sixth.

Whitworth drove in two in the bottom of the sixth and a bases-loaded walk to Alvarez drove in Prost for the final run.

The Lions will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Emporia State for a three-game series.
