Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team used the long ball and some big innings to sweep a double-header from visiting Wisconsin-Parkside today by the scores of 11-8 and 17-3.
Southern (4-1) got three home runs on the day from
Max Hogan as he went 3-7 with four RBIs and four runs scored.
Brett Graham,
Todd Hinkley and
Dave Prost all had homers on the day as the Lions hit six all together. Graham went 6-8 on the afternoon with six RBIs and five runs scored, while Hinkley was 3-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Tyler Sutherland was 3-6 with two RBIs and four runs scored, while
Cory Canterbury had two RBIs and three runs scored.
Walker Whitworth went 2-2 in game two with an RBI and two runs scored, while
Joe Kinder had a bases-clearing double in game one.
Eric Wilkinson threw three and two thirds of an inning of scoreless relief in game one to get the win, while
Cody Smith got the final out for the save. In game two,
Hayden Brauser threw four shutout innings to pick up the win, with
Danny Biggs threw the final inning.
In game one, UWP (1-2) scored eight runs in the top of the third to jump out in front 8-0, but the Lions scored 11 unanswered runs, starting with five in the bottom of the third to secure the win.
In game two, Parkside again jumped out after a three-run homer from Kyohei Makita in the second, but Southern scored six in the fourth and fifth and five in the sixth to cruise to the win.
The two teams will finish out the series tomorrow afternoon with one single nine-inning game. First-pitch from Warren Turner field is slated for 1 pm.
