Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Wisconsin-Parkside responded with seven unanswered runs to take out the Lions 11-10 in the home opener today at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (2-1), got another home run from
Tyler Sutherland as he drove in two and scored twice.
Max Hogan went 2-4 with two runs and an RBI, while
Brett Graham had a 2-3 day with two RBIs and a run scored.
Danny Biggs had two hits, while
Dave Prost scored once and drove in two.
Seth Mesey started for the Lions and went six and a third, striking out two and allowing just four earned runs.
Brandon Saddler and
Colin Chandler threw in relief and
Cody Smith pitched the final inning and a third, suffering his first loss of the season.
UWP (1-0) got two home runs from Kyohei Makita as he went 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Southern got a pair of runs in the first when Graham singled home Corey Canterbury and Hogan.
The Rangers tied it in the second, before Sutherland's home run in the fifth put the Lions up 4-2. UWP tied the game again the the top of the sixth, before the Lions scored six runs to go up 10-4 after six. Biggs singled home Graham, while Prost doubled home Biggs and
Todd Hinkley. Prost scored an unearned run, and Hogan tripled home Sutherland. Hogan later scored on a wild pitch.
The Rangers scored four runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to go ahead 11-10. The Lions threatened in the ninth, but couldn't pull ahead.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a double-header slated for 1 pm.
