Emporia, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell three sets to none tonight in a road MIAA match at Emporia State. Individual set scores were 18-25, 14-25 and 18-25.
Southern (3-13, 0-3 MIAA) was led offensively by
Bridgette Jaeger with eight kills and four digs.
Christina Perlinger had seven kills and eight digs, while
Bailey Rexford had a career-high 20 digs.
Whitney Harrison had 23 assists and 12 digs, while
Kat Gries had 12 digs of her own.
Emporia State (8-8, 1-3 MIAA) was led by Josie Williams with 11 kills.
The first set had five tied scores and two lead changes. With the set tied at six each, ESU scored five of the next six points to go up 11-7 and force a southern timeout. The lead was 19-11 and the lions got to within six (22-16) after a kill from Jaeger, but couldn't complete the comeback and dropped the opener.
In the second set, Emporia raced out to a 9-5 lead to force a Southern timeout. The Hornets led 22-14, forcing another MSSU timeout and the Lions couldn't recover.
In the third set, Southern trailed 9-6, but went on a 6-1 run to lead 12-10 midway through the set. ESU, responded with a 5-0 run of its own to lead 15-12 to force a Lions' timeout and led from there on out.
Southern will be back in action tomorrow evening as the Lions travel to Topeka to take on Washburn. First serve is set for 6 pm from Lee Arena.
