Volleyball Holds On For 3-2 Win At Southwest Baptist

Bolivar, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team held off Southwest Baptist tonight and took out the Bearcats, three sets to two inside Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar. Individual set scores were 20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 21-25 and 15-10.

Southern (4-14, 1-4 MIAA) was led by Christina Perlinger and Bailey Rexford as the pair had 14 kills each. Rexford added 17 digs, while Perlinger had 13. Whitney Harrison dished out 47 assists and added 16 digs, while Monica White had ten kills and four blocks. Alicia Pickett had eight kills and nine blocks, while Kat Gries had 14 digs.

SBU (3-15, 0-5 MIAA) was led with 15 kills each from Dana Neal and Kalyn Sotomayor.

The first set saw four tied scores, but the Bearcats never lost the lead and won 25-20.

In the second set, the Lions rushed out to a 12-9 lead to force an SBU timeout. The lead was 22-18 later on when another Bearcat timeout was called and the Lions scored three of the final four points, finished off by a kill from Perlinger, to take the set.

The third set saw four tied scores, but the Lions never relinquished the lead. Southern opened on a 6-1 run and forced an SBU timeout. The Lions led 22-19 and forced another Bearcat timeout, before scoring three-straight points to take the set.

In the fourth set, the Lions led 11-8 and forced an early SBU timeout, but the Bearcats came out of the timeout and led 13-12 after a 5-1 run to force a Southern timeout. The SBU lead was 21-16 late to force a Lions' timeout, and even though the Lions got to within four (23-19), Southern couldn't complete the comeback and the Bearcats forced the fifth and deciding set.

Southern led 8-5 at the turn and forced an SBU timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Lions scored three of the next four points to lead 11-6. After a kill from Rexford, the score was 13-8 and SBU called another timeout. The bearcats scored two points out of the timeout, but got no closer, as a kill from White and a block from White and Rexford finished off the match.

Southern will be back in action this Friday as they travel to Edmond, Okla. to take on tenth-ranked Central Oklahoma. First serve is slated for 6 pm.
