Joplin, Mo. -- Angie Turner had a perfect day
at the plate and helped the Lions to a double-header sweep of
Southwest Baptist winning game one 4-1 and the nightcap, 5-4.
Southern (11-23-1, 2-4 MIAA) scored late runs in both games to
take out the Bearcats (11-17, 0-4 MIAA).
In game one, the Lions scored first as Turner hit a home run to
straight away center field in the first inning. SBU answered back
with a run in the top of the second, but Southern scored three
times in the fifth to put the game away.
With an out, Breanna Volkmann reached on a walk. She moved to
second when Natalie Nelson reached on a sacrifice bunt and Volkmann
moved to third when no one was covering the bag. She then scored on
an infield bunt single from Kelli Bax. Both runners moved up on a
wild pitch and then scored on a two-RBI single from Turner.
Whitney Clute went the distance and allowed just three hits and
one unearned run. She struck out seven and walked none.
Turner was 2-2 with a run and three RBIs, while Bax and Dawn
Grass picked up the Lions' other two hits.
In game two, the Lions were down 3-0 heading into the bottom of
the second inning before Southern got on the board. Back-to-back
doubles from Clute and Megan Roark to start the inning gave the
Lions a run.
The game would stay that way until the fifth when the Lions
exploded for four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Nelson singled to start
the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Bax sacrificed
Nelson to third, and Turner walked to put runners at the corners.
Grass then singled up the middle, scoring Nelson and moving Turner
to third. Grass moved to second on the throw. Clute drove them both
in with a single to right and moved up on the throw. She later
scored when Roark singled to right.
SBU threatened in the seventh and scored a single run in the
inning, but Clute, who had relieved starter Tiffany Bennett to
start the inning recovered and got her first save of the
year.
Bennett started for the Lions and went six innings, scattering
six hits, allowing three unearned runs and striking out five, while
walking none.
Clute went 2-3 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in two
more. Roark had two hits and a pair of RBIs, while Grass went 2-3
with an RBI. Nelson and Turner both had a hit and scored
once.
The Lions will be back in action this Wednesday, April 7,
playing host to Pittsburg State in a double-header beginning at 5
pm. The game will be the Lions' annual Strikeout Cancer night.
Southern will be wearing pink shirts and taking donations in help
of breast cancer research.
