Topeka, Kan. -- Angie Turner had three RBIs and
three hits in the double-header as the Missouri Southern softball
team split a double-header at Washburn today, winning 3-0 in the
opener and falling 4-3 in extra innings in game two.
Southern (13-27-1, 4-8 MIAA) got a superb pitching performance
in game one from Whitney Clute as the senior from Webb City went
the distance in shutting out the Lady Blues. She scattered five
hits, while striking out two and walking none.
The Lions scored a run in each of the first and the second
innings as Angie Turner homered in the first and Breanna Volkmann
drove in Clute in the second with an RBI single.
Southern scored one more run in the seventh, as Kelli Bax
doubled down the left field line, scoring Krista Bomak.
Turner, Clute and Volkmann had two hits each in the game, while
Turner, Bax and Volkmann drove in a run each.
Washburn (19-15, 6-5 MIAA) scored first in game two as the Lady
Blues scored a pair of runs in the fourth when Brittany Cushing
homered to left field.
The Lions answered back with two runs in the fifth to tie the
game when Bax singled to start the inning. She scored when when
Jessica Brooks followed that up with a double down the right field
line. Brooks then scored on an RBI double from Turner.
Both teams remained scoreless and forced extra innings when the
Lions went ahead 3-2 in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from
Turner that scored Brooks who had doubled to lead off the
inning.
Washburn tied the game in the bottom of the eighth and won in
the ninth on an RBI single from Lindsay Moore.
Tiffany Bennett started for Southern and went 8.2 innings,
scattering nine hits and allowing four runs.
Turner, Brooks and Natalie Nelson had two hits each, while
Turner drove in two and Brooks one.
The Lions will be back in action on Tuesday when Southern plays
host to Northeastern State in a double-header beginning at 4 pm at
Kungle Field. Southern will also host NSU on Wednesday in another
double-header beginning at 2 pm.
