Maryville, Mo. -- Despite scoring 20 runs,
knocking out five home runs and eight total extra-base hits, the
Missouri Southern softball team dropped a pair of games today at
Northwest Missouri, falling 11-10 in game one and 14-10 in game
two.
Southern (9-21-1, 0-4 MIAA) scored eight runs over the first
three innings in game one and held an 8-3 lead after three. A
sacrifice fly from Dawn Grass in the first, a two-run single from
Kelli Bax in the second and a three run homer from Krista Bomak in
the third accounted for the first six runs and Bax drove in two
more in the third with a triple.
Northwest (14-9, 2-0 MIAA) answered back with a run in the
fourth and five in the fifth to make the score 9-8 Bearcats. A
two-run homer from Grass in the sixth briefly gave the Lions back
the lead at 10-9, but Northwest scored a pitch on a wild pitch in
the seventh to take the game.
Bax drove in four with two hits in game one. Grass and Bomak
both homered and drove in three in the game.
In game two, Northwest scored five runs over the first two
innings, before the Lions answered back with seven runs in the
third and two in the fourth to go up 9-5 after three and a
half.
Back-to-back home runs from Natalie Nelson and Bax to start the
third got the Lions going in the inning. Megan Roark drove in two
with a single and Bomak drove in a run with a double. Nelson then
drove in two more with a single in her second at-bat of the
inning.
A home run from Angie Turner and an RBI single from Whitney
Clute accounted for two runs for the Lions in the top of the
fourth, but Northwest answered back with three runs of their own to
come within a run as the Lions led 9-8 after four.
Southern scored another run in the top of the fifth to go up
10-8. With two runners on, Turner singled up the middle to score
Bax.
Northwest then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the
seventh, capped off by a game-ending grand slam off the bat of Kit
Daugherty.
Nelson drove in three in the game, while Roark and Turner had a
pair of RBIs each. Bax, Bomak and Clute had an RBI each, while
Turner and Bax had four hits apiece.
The Lions will be back in action this Wednesday with a
non-conference match up at Drury. The double-header will begin at 3
pm.
