EMPORIA, Kan. — The Missouri Southern track and field teams closed out the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Saturday at Francis G. Welch Stadium with three national champions, multiple podium finishes and historic team results as both squads earned top-three finishes.
The Lion women turned in the best finish in program history, tying for third place with 40 points to secure the program's first-ever NCAA team trophy. The Missouri Southern men finished third overall with 45 points.
Dailynn VanDeren highlighted the day for the women by capturing the national championship in the shot put with a facility-record mark of 16.93m (55-6.5), earning First Team All-American honors.
Briar Gillum added a sixth-place finish at 15.40m (50-6.25), while
Allyssa Mahone placed 12th with a throw of 14.54m (47-8.5).
The women's javelin group also delivered a dominant performance as
Adrianne Casey won the national title with a personal-best throw of 52.71m (172-11).
Keilee Johnson finished second at 52.39m (171-10), while
Mary Moore earned fourth place with a personal-best mark of 50.39m (165-4). Riley Moore placed 10th with a personal-best throw of 45.71m (149-11), and
Maggie Kauk finished 13th at 45.10m (147-11).
On the men's side,
Cedric Pearson claimed the national championship in the shot put with a mark of 18.85m (61-10.25).
Jamale Williams added a fourth-place finish at 18.55m (60-10.5), while
Trace Wooldridge placed 15th at 16.99m (55-9).
In the men's javelin,
Manuel Campana earned First Team All-American honors with a third-place throw of 71.38m (234-2), while
Garrett Strange finished sixth with a personal-best mark of 69.68m (228-7).
Phillip Jefferson capped off the meet on the track with a fourth-place finish in the men's 400m hurdles finals, clocking a time of 51.19 seconds to earn First Team All-American honors.
In the men's pole vault,
Zeke Galvicius earned Second Team All-American recognition with a ninth-place clearance of 5.26m (17-3).
