Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team hosted the University of Central Missouri Mules in a conference match-up on Tuesday. Both teams got on the board in the first inning, but Central Missouri pulled ahead and held the lead, ultimately securing an 11–5 win over the Lions.
Missouri Southern (22-19, 14-13 MIAA) | Central Missouri (30-9, 21-6 MIAA)
The Mules took an early lead 2-0 in the first inning. The Lions responded at the bottom of the inning when
Drew Townsend homered to the right field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Central Missouri extended their lead in the second inning, bringing the score to 5-1.
Southern narrowed the gap in the third inning.
Drew Townsend singled and later scored on an error, followed by
Blake Jones's RBI single that brought home
Ethan Clark, making it 6-3.
The Mules added a run in the fourth inning, the score now 7-3.
In the seventh inning, Central Missouri plated one run, 8-3. In the bottom of the inning, Southern's
Drew Townsend added his second home run of the game, bringing the score to 8-4.
In the ninth inning, the Mules added three runs, 11-4. Southern rallied late, as
Cy Darnell tripled and scored on
Treghan Parker's single. Central Missouri held its lead for the 11-5 win.
Drew Townsend hit two home runs and drove in two RBIs while scoring three times.
Ethan Clark contributed with two hits, including a double, and scored once.
Cy Darnell hit a triple and scored once. The Lions tallied nine hits.
Cole Gayman pitched 4.0 innings with a strikeout.
Caden Carter followed with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, and
Cole White contributed 1.0 innings and struck out one.
Trent Harris followed with 1.0 innings.
Alex Baker closed the game with 0.2 innings, striking out both batters he faced.
Marcus Young added 0.1 innings.
