Lions' Late Rally Halted by Hornets

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern baseball team hosted Emporia State University Hornets in a conference matchup. The Lions showed resilience at the plate, collecting 15 hits, but their late-game push was halted by the Hornets.

In the bottom of the second inning, Southern took an early lead with Nate Mieszkowski hitting a solo home run to left field, putting them ahead 1-0.

The Hornets responded in the third inning, scoring four runs, putting the score to 4-1.

The Lions narrowed the gap in the fifth inning when Drew Townsend hit a two-run home run to right field, driving in Cy Darnell and scoring 6-3.

In the seventh inning, Drew Townsend tripled to right center, scoring Chayton Beck and Brayden Luikart, then followed with a single to center field, bringing Townsend home and trimming the deficit to 9-5.

Southern had a ninth-inning rally with Chayton Beck, Drew Townsend, and Brayden Luikart all reaching base; Ethan Clark singled to drive in Beck. Jake Leeker then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Townsend to score, closing the game with a 12-7 score.

Drew Townsend tallied four hits, including a home run and a triple, along with three RBIs; Nate Mieszkowski had a home run among his two hits, driving in one run. Cy Darnell contributed with two hits, including a double, and scored once. Brayden Luikart added two hits and one RBI. The Lions tallied 15 hits.

Kyle Moore pitched for 5.0 innings, seven strikeouts, and faced 26 batters. Owen Schneider followed with 1.1 innings, striking out two batters and faced 12 batters. Lane Chapman contributed 1.2 innings, with three strikeouts while facing eight batters. Cole White closed with a 1.0 inning and faced five batters.
