Lions Battled Hard but Fall to Gorillas Late Rally

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern baseball team hosted the Pittsburg State University Gorillas in a midweek conference matchup. The Gorillas took an early lead, but the Lions battled for control and would take it in the sixth inning. Pittsburg added a late run and held on for the win.

The deadlock was broken in the third inning when Pittsburg State added a run, giving them a 1-0 advantage.
 
Missouri Southern responded in the bottom of the fourth when Drew Townsend hit a solo home run to left field, tying the game at 1-1.
 
In the fifth inning, the Gorillas scored again, regaining the lead at 2-1. The Lions answered back with Cy Darnell driving a single up the middle and later scoring on a wild pitch, leveling the score again at 2-2.
 
Southern took the lead when Ethan Clark singled and later scored on Blake Jones' fielder's choice, putting the team ahead 3-2 at the end of the sixth inning.
 
In the seventh inning, Pitt State added four runs to make the score 6-3. The Lions plated Chayton Beck on a Jake Leeker single to right field, bringing the score to 7-4.
 
The Gorillas held their advantaged and secured an 8-4 victory.
 
Drew Townsend hit a home run and drove in one run. Chayton Beck recorded a double, and a run scored. Jake Leeker had a hit and a run batted in. The Lions tallied eight hits.
 
Casey Stalzer pitched 2.0 innings, allowing no hits or runs and striking out one. Owen Schneider pitched 2.0 innings with one strikeout and one walk. Walker Sweet threw 1.0 inning, giving up one hit and one earned run while striking out two. Michael Moore pitched 0.1 innings, and Caden Carter 0.2 innings. Laif Hultine pitched 1.0 inning, and Lane Chapman closed with 2.0 innings and three strikeouts.
