Limón Wraps Up Historic Season At NCAA D-II National Championship

05.23.24

Winter Gardens, Fla. – Missouri Southern's Luis Limón traveled to Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, Florida to be the third Lion in program history to compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship as an individual on May 21-23. Orange County National Golf Center is set to play 7,419 yards and has a par of 71 strokes. Three consecutive tough back nines proved to raise scores around the tournament as Limón wrapped up his historic season tied for 70th individually at the National Championship.

Day one was a strong start for the sophomore as he shot two birdies on the front nine that canceled out a +2 on the back nine to bring in an even par 71 after the first round. At the end of day one, Limón's 71 tied him for 29th individually.

Scores around the tournament were higher for round two, and so was the same for Limón. After only shooting one over par on the front nine, the back nine again proved difficult as Limón shot four over to finish round two with a 76 (+5). The 76 for round two brought Limón's total score to 147 (+5) and dropped his individual placement to tied for 72nd.

Limón had a strong start to the final day with a one under par front nine, but once again struggled on the back nine with another four over to turn in a day three scorecard of 74 (+3). Limón finished his historic season with a 221 (+8) total score and tied for 70th individually at the NCAA Division II Championship.

"We both had a great experience together on a really good golf course," commented coach Mike Wheeler, "It is another step in Luis's journey to becoming the best he can be in the game we both love very much. He has an extremely bright future and I am excited to follow his progression moving forward."

With the final day wrapped up for Limón, that concludes the Lions historic 2023-24 season where they won their second consecutive MIAA Championship, regular season champions and MIAA Golfer of the Year. The Lions won a program's best five tournaments in 2023-24 and had three golfers earn All-MIAA honors. Head Coach Mike Wheeler also won his second consecutive MIAA Coach of the Year as he officially retires with the conclusion of the 2024 NCAA Division II National Championship and will assist in the search for the new head of the golf program until June 30th.
