Topeka, Kan. – The Missouri Southern soccer program battled Washburn today on the road at a windy Yager Stadium losing 1-0.
The Lions (3-11-2, 2-7-0 MIAA) and Ichabods (8-5-2, 4-4-1 MIAA) played the first half to a scoreless tie as
Maya Greenquist had three shots, two being shots on goal to lead both teams. Missouri Southern had two late chances from
Ashley Koepp and
Lainey Waldron with under three minutes to go in the half that forced saves by Washburn's goalie to keep it scoreless.
Washburn got their goal in the 49
th minute following a blocked shot inside the box that found Olivia Harriger who put it into the opposite corner for the 1-0 lead. In the 67
th minute a Washburn attacker got free inside the box and was 1-on-1 with Lion goalie
Riley Laver who made a diving save to keep it at 1-0. The Lions would have a
Jori Hays shot in the 73
rd minute from outside the box that required a save. Following that save both teams' defenses limited each other from creating shotting opportunities for the rest of the match.
Individually Greenquist lead all players with three shots and two shots on goal while Hays, Koepp and Waldron each had a shot on goal. For the Ichabods Mackenzie Menke had two shots while Khloe Schuckman and goal scorer Harriger had a shot on goal and Raegan Wells finished with five saves in goal. As a team the Lions had more shots (9-6), shots on goal (5-2) and tied for corner kicks with three each in the game.
Up next for the Lions is the last road game of the season against Central Missouri on Friday with kickoff from the South Recreational Complex at 7:00 pm in Warrensburg and a return to Hal Bodon Field on Sunday to play Northwest Missouri with kickoff at 2:00 pm.
