Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern women's soccer team opened conference play with a 2-1 overtime victory over Northeastern State inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Â
A minute into the overtime period, freshman midfielder
Courtney Marten gathered the ball after it deflected off the defender, went straight forward and shot one right between a sliding goalkeeper's legs from the five-yard mark for the game winner.
Â
The Lions (5-2-1, 1-0-0 MIAA) quickly moved the ball up the field, ending with a high kick by sophomore midfielder
Meredith Belrose, who found Marten deep down the field for the score.
Â
Along with the assist, Belrose recorded a goal of her own on a header over the goalkeeper's reach off a corner kick launched by forward
Mara Faiazza from the far sideline towards the one-yard mark in the 84th minute of regulation to force overtime (1-1).
Â
NSU (6-2-0, 0-1-0 MIAA) scored first with about two minutes remaining in the first period to head into halftime up 1-0, but was held to two shots in the second period and six overall after creating 24 total in the teams' first meeting one week ago.
Â
Southern begins a four-game road trip in St. Charles, Missouri versus Lindenwood on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 pm.
