Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team battled bitterly cold temperatures and frequent snow as the Lions split a double-header with visiting Maryville, losing game one 11-3, but winning the nightcap 8-2.
Southern (13-10) got a great start on the mound in game two from
Sean Goostree as the senior went five and two thirds, scattering five hits, while allowing just two runs.
Colin Chandler threw a hitless three and a third innings of relief for the save as he struck out four and shutout out the Saints (11-6).
In game one, the Lions gor RBIs from
Joe Paulino, Tyler Sutherand and
Dave Prost.
Will Bausinger started and picked up the loss, while
Hayden Brauser,
Matt Harvey,
Brandon Saddler and
Christian Goshen threw in relief.
In game two, Maryville got on top 2-0 early, but the Lions scored two in the bottom of the second to tie it up, getting RBIs from Whitworth and an unearned run from Whitworth.
The Lions added three runs in the fifth, on a sacrifice fly from
Max Hogan, and two unearned runs from
Brett Graham and
Richie Gorski. The Lions added another three runs in the eighth on a two RBI triple from
Trever Burkdoll and Burkdoll later scored an unearned run.
Burkdoll had two RBIs in game two, while Sutherland, Hogan and Whitworth drove in a run each. Sutherland had three hits, while
Danny Biggs had two.
The Lions will be back in action this weekend as Southern plays host to Missouri Western on Friday through Sunday at Warren Turner Field.
