Soccer Drops Heartbreaker at Rogers State

Claremore, Okla. - Missouri Southern Women's Soccer dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Rogers State at Solider Field Thursday evening.

It was a tail of two halves as the Lions dominated the first stanza holding RSU with out a shot while taking 13, five SOG, of their own. Southern also dominated in the corner kicks taking seven to the Hillcats zero and had their best opportunity of the half, a header from freshman Jazzleen Wharry, sail just wide left off one of the seven corner from sophomore Julia Liberty.

In the second half it was Rogers State who out-shot the Lions 7-2 but Southern found the back of the net first with a goal from senior Carly Cecil in the 67th minute off a deflection as she snuck the ball through the RSU defense into the lower left 90. The Hillcats tied it at 1-1 in the 84th minute off a header by Marlaina Trahant from six yards out to the back post off a free kick from Jasmine Guerra. Guerra had the game winner on another free kick from the left side just three minutes later as the ball bounced in after a miscommunication by the Lions' defense.

For the match the Lions out-shot Rogers State 15-7 and Southern took 8 corners to the Hillcats 1.  Freshman Luz Galindo got the start in the net for Southern and played all 90 minutes allowing the two goals while nabbing a save. Juniors Taylor Beck and Brooke Ishmael led the Lions with three shots, two on goal, each and sophomores Julia Liberty added two, both on goal, and Jeannine Escobar added two shots, as well.

Southern will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Wichita, Kansas to take on Newman University. Kick off from Wilkins Field is scheduled for 1 p,m,
