Joplin, Mo. -- The 13th ranked Missouri Southern baseball team came back to tie the ball game, but Southwest Baptist got a home run in the 11th to take the first game of the series from the Lions, 5-3 tonight at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (20-8, 10-8 MIAA) got a 3-for-4 performance from
Chris Hoffman with a run scored.
Tyler Sutherland went 2-for-5, while
Jacob Bryant,
Jesse Rall,
Matt Smith and
Richie Gorski had a hit each. Bryant and
Brett Graham drove in a run each.
Payton Walker started and pitched into the tenth inning, but left with the game tied and suffered a no-decision. Walker struck out four in the game.
Austin Aspegren pitched the final two innings and moved to 1-1 on the season.
SBU (15-13, 11-9 MIAA) had two hits each from Caleb Sneed and Sean Murley.
The Bearcats scored a run in the second and two in the third to go up 3-0 after three innings. Southern scored a run in the fifth when
Brett Graham reached on a fielder's choice. The Lions added two more runs to tie the game in the sixth. Gorski scored on a throwing error and Hoffman scored on Bryant's RBI.
The game stayed tied until the 11th inning when SBU gor a two-out walk to extend the inning. Sneed then homered to right field for the go-ahead runs.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Turner Field is slated for 2 pm.
