No. 19 Baseball Falls 11-3 In Series Opener At Washburn

Topeka, Kan. -- The No. 19 Missouri Southern Baseball team ran into a hot-hitting Washburn squad tonight and the Lions fell 11-3 at Washburn's Falley Field. 

Southern (18-6, 8-6 MIAA) got a pair of hits each from Jacob Bryant and Tyler Sutherland, while Bryant drove in two runs and had a triple. Chris Hoffman, Brett Graham, and Hayden Steele all scored a run each, while Hoffman and Matt Smith had a hit each. 

Cody Hutchinson started for the Lions and went just an inning and two third, surrendering seven runs on eight hits to get the loss and move his record to 3-3 on the season. Hunter Harrison and Austin Aspegren combined for two and a third innings, while Sean Goostree pitched the final four innings, limiting the Ichabods to just one hit. 

Washburn (13-11, 8-6 MIAA) hit three home runs on the afternoon, while Tanner Triggs had three hits and David Gauntt drove in three. 

Washburn scored five in the first and two in the second, before the Lions picked up a run in the top of the third. Southern scored its first run when Bryant tripled home Steele. 

The Lions added two more runs in the fourth to cut the score to 7-3. Bryant singled home Hoffman and Graham scored on the play after a fielding error. 

Washburn, however, answered back with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. 

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is slated for 4 pm.
