No. 19 Baseball Comes Back To Win 13-10 Over Central Oklahoma

Joplin, Mo. -- Matt Smith drove in four and Conner Matson threw four and a third innings of relief for the win as the 19th ranked Missouri Southern baseball team came-from-behind to defeat visiting Central Oklahoma 13-10 today at Warren Turner Field. 

Southern (17-5, 8-5 MIAA) had a stellar relief performance from Matson as the righty threw four and a third, striking out four and walking none, while allowing just one earned run to move his record to 1-0 on the season. Cody Smith started the game and struck out five in four and two thirds of an inning, but six unearned runs chased Smith from his start. 

Matt Smith went 2-for-4 with a home run and four driven in, scoring twice. Tyler Sutherland went 3-for-5 with three driven in and two runs scored. Jesse Rall had two hits and a pair of runs scored, while Chris Hoffman and Brett Graham scored twice. Graham had a pair of hits and an RBI, while Jacob Bryant went 3-for-6 with a run and an RBI. Richie Gorski had a home run, while Hayden Steele had a hit, an RBI and a run scored. 

The Lions started the scoring in the second as back-to-back doubles from Sutherland and Graham plated Sutherland. Steele then drove in Graham. 

A Gorski homer in the third put the Lions up 3-0, but UCO (16-8, 8-5 MIAA) scored nine runs, three earned, over the fourth and fifth innings to go up 9-3. 

The Lions picked up two of the runs int he fifth on a two-RBI single from Smith, scoring Rall and Paulino. Southern then scored six runs in the sixth to go ahead. A Sutherland double cleared the bases for the first three runs, and Steele reached on an error, scoring Sutherland. Smith then hit a home run to left center for the sixth run of the inning. 

Paulino singled home Graham for the first run of the eighth, while Bryant added an RBI single to put Southern up 13-9. The Bronchos scored a single run in the ninth before Matson shut the door. 

Southern will be back in action tomorrow night as the Lions play host to Wisconsin Parkside. First pitch from Warren Turner Field is slated for 5 pm.
