Lions Fall In Volleyball Action

Russellville, Ark. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped two matches in the final day of the Arkansas Tech Tournament, falling to Arkansas Tech and Newman. 

In the first match against the host Golden Suns (4-3), the Lions (0-8) fell three sets to one. Individual set scores were 16-25, 19-25, 25-21 and 17-25.  Tech hit .361 in the first set and cruised to the victory. Southern led 6-4 in the second set, but Tech scored ten of the next 12 points to take a 14-8 lead and force an MSSU timeout. Southern got as close as 19-15, but couldn't complete the comeback. 

In the third set, the Lions trailed 4-1, but tied the set at four and again at six, seven and eight, before taking the lead for good at 9-8. Back-to-back kills from Monica White and Alyx Gepford gave the Lions a 16-10 lead and forced an ATU timeout. Southern went on to take the set. 

ATU led from start to finish in the final set. 

White and Bridgette Jaeger had 11 kills each with White hitting .500 in the match. Abby Finder dished out 34 assists and added 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the year and third of the weekend. Katie Wiele and Gepford had 15 and 13 digs respectively. Callie Whetstone had eight kills, hitting .500 and added five blocks. 

In the Lions' second match, Southern fell three sets to none to Newman. Individual set scores were 17-25, 15, 25 and 25-27. 

Whetstone had nine kills and four blocks, while hitting .571 in the match. Finder had 20 assists and nine digs, while Wiele and Gepford had 11 and 10 digs, respectively. White had seven kills in the match. 

The Lions will be back in action this Thursday, when they travel to Point Lookout, Mo. to take on College of the Ozarks. First serve is slated for 8 pm.
