Joplin, Mo - Missouri Southern Women's Soccer team (2-2-0) got a golden goal in the 107th minute of the match to defeat visiting Newman University (1-2-1) 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Hal Bodon Field.
The Lions and Newman battled it out in the first 100 minutes with no score as Southern held a 12-8 advantage in shots while the Jets and Southern were even at 6-6 in shots on goal.
Carly Cecil took a cross from junior
Hannah Cook in the 107th minute and took the game winning shot from 20 yards out. As the shot was headed to the upper left 90 a Newman defender deflected the shot into the upper right 90 for the golden goal. The goal was Cecil's second of the season while the game winning assist from Cook was her first of the season.

Michaela Altvater each had a shot to account for the 13 shots for the Lions. Newman took 10 shots on the day and were led by Paige Thompson with four, one on goal, and Morgan Foster with two, both on goal.

Shawnee Phillips played the 106:10 in the net shutting out the Jets while recording six saves on the day.
Up next the Lions will host MIAA rival Southwest Baptist on Thursday, September 17 at Hal Bodon Field. Kickoff for the non-conference match is slated for 7pm.
