Osburn Home Run Propels Softball to Sweep

Springfield, Mo. - Missouri Southern Softball completed the double header sweep of Drury in Springfield on Tuesday evening at Thompson Field winning 4-0 and 4-3.

Game One

The Lions struck first as the pushed across two runs in the third inning as Sydney Blue led off with an infield single to shortstop. Alana Hester moved Blue on her bunt single to third base and Abi Corbett moved both runners up 60 feet as she grounded out to the pitcher. Blue scored on Myranda Stewart's fielder's choice to second and Hester scored on Michala Wood's bunt single back to the DU pitcher.

Southern would pick up two more insurance runs in the sixth as Blue came up with a one out single to right field and scored on Corbett's single to center. Stewart would then double home Hester to make the score 4-0.

The Lions peppered 11 hits over the Drury defense as Hester, Blue, and Brooke Swadley collected two each.

That would be all the Lions needed as Kali' Hodson and Ashley Lutz combined for a one hit shutout of Drury. Hodson (2-12) picked up the win shutting out Drury for three innings and allowing no hits. Lutz got the save (2) with four innings of shut out pitching allowing just the double in the bottom of the seventh and striking out seven Panthers.

Game Two

Drury got things started in the second as they scored a run Herman's single to center. The Panthers then added two more runs in the third as Ross reached on a Lions' error and Forge hit a home run over the right center field fence.

The Lions answered back in the sixth as Corbett hit a one out double to left center and scored on Wood's single to right field. Kathryn Goins-Osburn would tie the game up as she sent a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence, her fourth of the year. Southern would take the lead in the seventh as Sarah Williams led off with a double off the center field wall and scored on a fielding error by the Drury second baseman.

Shelby Mitchell got the start for the Lions going four innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with one strike out. Lutz (6-12) got the win as she pitched three innings of shut out relief allowing just two Drury hits and striking out one.

On The Day

Goins-Osburn led the way offensively for Southern going 3-for-7 (.429) with a slugging percentage of .857, the home run and two RBIs. Wood finished the day with two RBIs and a double, Corbett finished with a run scored, a double, and an RBI and Stewart had two RBIs to go with her double.

Up Next

The Lions will host Missouri Western on Friday afternoon for a MIAA double header with first pitch from Lea Kungle Field scheduled for 3pm.
