Maryville, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern
softball team dropped two games today in day two of the MIAA
Crossover, falling 5-3 to Missouri Western and 5-2 to Truman
State.
Southern (15-33-1) scored three runs on just two hits in the
opener against the Griffons (24-20). Dawn Grass opened up the
scoring with a two-run homer in the first, scoring Breanna Volkmann.
Western scored a run in each of the second and third innings to
tie the game at two, but the Lions went back ahead in the top of
the fifth when Angie Turner drove in Kim Diaz while advancing on a
fielder's choice.
The Griffons, however, put the game away with three runs in the
bottom of the fifth, two unearned.
Grass drove in two and scored once, while Volkmann had the
Lions' lone other hit.
The Lions fell behind early in game two as Truman (17-22) scored
twice in the first.
Southern answered back with a run in the second, however when
Jessica Brooks homered to left center for her second long ball of
the season.
Truman scored two more in the third and a run in the fifth to go
up 5-1, before the Lions added a run in the sixth when Brooke Hurley singled through the left side to score Turner.
Kelli Bax had two hits for the Lions, while four others had a
hit each.
The Lions will finish off the crossover with games against Fort
Hays and Nebraska-Omaha.
