Benkert makes finals of mile and powers DMR to second-place finish

Albuquerque, NM -- Brennan Benkert turned in the third fastest time in the prelims of the mile run and anchored the Lions distance medley relay team today in day one of the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Benkert finished third in his heat in the mile with a time of 4:10.66, just three one hundredths of a second off of the lead. He will compete in the finals of the mile on Saturday at 3:40 pm MST. 

Benkert also anchored the DMR team to a second-place and All-American finish. Aki Nummela ran the opening leg with Kevin Wright running the 400m leg and Dustin Dixon running the 800m. Benkert made up serious time and nearly pulled off a national championship. The Lions finished in a time of 9:54.97. 

In other action Jordan Patton missed out on the finals in the 200m with a time of 22:03, while Chris Brown finished 11th in the high jump. 

Benkert will be in action tomorrow running in the finals of the mile.
