Joplin, Mo. -- With the match squared at 1-1
with 21 minutes left, Alicia Vonderheid took a perfect feed from
Candis Clark inside the box and scored to put the Missouri Southern
Lions up for good in a 2-1 win over the Emporia State Hornets in
MIAA action Thursday night (Oct. 1) at Hal Bodon Field.
The Lions grabbed the lead in the first half when Michelle Dimza
turned and launched a shot from about 30 yards away into the net at
the 26:35 mark of the first half.
The Lions held that advantage through the first half when the
Hornets' Sarah Anderson scored off an assist from Holli Schletzbaum
just three minutes into the second half that tied the match.
Southern was extremely aggressive in their offensive attack
throughout, recording a season-high 24 shot attempts and
out-shooting the Hornets 24-15 overall and 9-8 on-goal.
Stephanie Heines led the Lions with five shots and three
shots-on-goal. Anderson also had a team-best five shots and
three on-goal for the Hornets.
Randi Russell made seven saves in the net for the Lions (4-7,
2-5 MIAA). Katrina Goscha and Nikki Schmitz combined for
seven saves for the Hornets (1-7-1, 1-5 MIAA). Goscha started
at goalkeeper for ESU, before leaving with an injury in the 41st
minute of the first half and giving way to Schmitz for the
remainder of the match.
The Lions will look to make it three straight victories with a
matchup at Washburn on Saturday evening (Oct. 3). The match
is set for 6 p.m. in Topeka, Kan.
