Prior To Southern
Newman prepped at Carl Junction High School, where she competed in cross country and track & field for the Bulldogs. She earned Second Team All-Conference honors in cross country as a sophomore and senior, while receiving Honorable Mention recognition as a junior. In track & field, Newman earned All-Conference honors in the 4x800-meter relay, 800 meters, and 3,200 meters as a junior, and in the 800 meters and 4x400-meter relay as a senior. She was an All-State selection in the 800 meters as a senior, set the school record in the event, and was a two-time Bulldog Award recipient in cross country. Newman also earned the Iron Dog Award. She posted personal bests of 20:03 in the 5K, 2:18 in the 800 meters, 5:38 in the 1,600 meters, and 12:23 in the 3,200 meters.

Marissa, the daughter of Russell and Beth Newman, is pursuing a degree in Exercise Science-Kinesiology at Southern.
