No. 11 Softball Captures 2026 MIAA Championship

No. 11 Softball Captures 2026 MIAA Championship with Sweep of No. 4 Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. — No. 11-ranked Missouri Southern softball (45-7, 20-4 MIAA) captured the 2026 MIAA Regular-Season Championship with a doubleheader sweep of No. 4-ranked Pittsburg State (45-8, 17-7 MIAA) Saturday at Pittsburg State Softball Field.

The MIAA Championship is MSSU's sixth in program history (1990, 1992, 1993, 1998, 2001, 2026) and first since 2001.

The Lions dominated the Gorillas, 13-2, in game one of Saturday's doubleheader before edging PSU, 3-2, in the finale.

With the pair of wins Saturday, MSSU improved to 45-7 in 2026 which is the most wins for the Lions since posting a 45-8 campaign in 1995. It ties for the fifth highest win total in Southern history.

The Lions finished the 2026 league slate 20-4 against MIAA opponents to secure the top seed in the 2026 MIAA Softball Championship, hosted May 6-9 at Emporia State University's Trusler Sports Complex. MSSU will face the winner of No. 8 seed Washburn and No. 9 seed Missouri Western in the Quarterfinals Thursday, May 7 at 11 a.m., CT.

GAME 1: No. 11 Missouri Southern 13, No. 4 Pittsburg State 2
MSSU secured a decisive 13–2 run-rule victory over Pittsburg State in game one Saturday, powered by a five-run sixth inning. Missouri Southern accumulated 12 hits and took advantage of eight walks to dominate the matchup.

MSSU seized control in the third inning with a four-run outburst, turning a 2–0 deficit into a 4–2 advantage. Bailey Dillon ignited the rally with a single and a stolen base, followed by Taylor Nuckolls' single to move Dillon to third. A hit by pitch to Katie Gray loaded the bases, setting up Carsen Tinkler's crucial two-run double. Avery Sue Davis capped the inning with a two-run double.

The Lions maintained pressure, adding three runs in the fifth inning. Davis' solo home run and Dillon's RBI single extended the lead to 7–2. Nuckolls added another RBI single (8-2), and Missouri Southern's aggressive baserunning and timely hitting continued to build momentum. In the sixth, the Lions capitalized on defensive miscues and free bases, scoring five additional runs to secure the victory, highlighted by Tinkler's RBI single and Nuckolls' speed on the base paths.

Pittsburg State took an early lead in the first inning with a two-run homer by Lexi Davis, making it 2–0.

In the third inning, Missouri Southern responded with a strong offensive push. Dillon singled and later scored along with Nuckolls on a double by Tinkler. Avery Sue Davis added two more runs with a double to right center, putting Missouri Southern ahead 4–2 by the end of the inning.

Missouri Southern added to its lead in the fourth inning when Micah Snider, pinch running, scored on a sacrifice fly by Tinkler, making it 5–2.

The fifth inning saw MSSU further extend its lead. Avery Sue Davis hit a solo home run, followed by an RBI single from Dillon, and Nuckolls drove in another run with a single. This offensive burst increased the lead to 8–2.

In the sixth inning, Missouri Southern capitalized on errors and timely hitting. Maddie Rolfs scored on a single followed by a fielding error, and Easton Walter's RBI single brought in another run. Nuckolls and Tinkler added RBI, contributing to a five-run inning. This extended the lead to 13–2, which remained the final score after PSU failed to score in the bottom half.

Taylor Nuckolls led the team with four hits (4-for-5), two runs, and two RBI, while also stealing two bases. Avery Sue Davis contributed significantly by recording three hits (3-for-4), including a home run, a double, and drove in three runs. Carsen Tinkler added to the scoring effort with two hits (2-for-4) and four RBI, including a double.

Kiki Pickens delivered a commanding performance, pitching a complete game over six innings. Pickens allowed just two hits and two earned runs, issuing a walk while striking out three batters. Despite giving up a solo home run, Pickens maintained control with 79 pitches, 46 of which were strikes, earning her career-best matching 19th win of the season (19-3, 9-1 in MIAA in 2026, 19-6 in 2025).

It marked Pickens' third-straight complete-game and fourth complete game in her last four starts.

GAME 2: No. 11 Missouri Southern 3, No. 4 Pittsburg State 2
Missouri Southern secured a narrow 3–2 victory over Pittsburg State in game two Saturday. The game featured a solid pitching performance from Emily Davis, who struck out nine batters and allowed only three hits.

In a tense final inning, the Lions edged ahead of the Gorillas with a crucial offensive push. Gianna Saggese singled down the left-field line and stole second. Easton Walter then delivered a pivotal RBI double to right field, allowing Saggese to score and break the tie for a 3–2 lead. This decisive sequence proved to be the difference-maker in the game.

Earlier, Missouri Southern capitalized on PSU errors in the first inning to gain an initial advantage. Bailey Dillon singled and advanced on a throwing error, setting the stage for Taylor Nuckolls, who reached first on another error, allowing Dillon to score an unearned run. Despite Pittsburg State rallying with back-to-back homers in the third inning, the Lions responded in the fifth. Pinch runner Micah Snider scored from second on Nuckolls's single, leveling the game at 2–2.

The final frame saw effective pitching from Davis who retired the Gorillas' batters in order, securing the narrow victory.

Missouri Southern opened the game strong with Dillon singling and advancing to second on a throwing error. Dillon's run was unearned as Nuckolls reached first on a fielding error. The inning concluded with the Lions leading 1-0.

Pittsburg State responded in the third inning with consecutive home runs, taking a 2–1 lead. Haili Igou and Kadyn Trochim each homered to center field.

In the fifth inning, Walter walked and was replaced by pinch runner Snider. Snider then scored when Nuckolls singled to center field, tying the game 2–2.

The decisive seventh inning saw Saggese single and steal second. Walter then doubled to right field, allowing Saggese to score, giving Southern a 3–2 lead.

Easton Walter contributed with a run-scoring double and added another hit in the game. Taylor Nuckolls drove in a run with one of her hits, while Gianna Saggese scored once and tallied a hit.

Emily Davis delivered a complete game performance, pitching seven innings and securing her 18th win of the season (18-4, 9-3 MIAA in 2026). She allowed only two earned runs on three hits, while striking out nine batters. Despite conceding a pair of home runs, Davis maintained control, throwing 64 of her 99 pitches for strikes. Her effort included four walks but was pivotal in limiting the Gorillas' scoring opportunities.
