Softball Captures 2026 NCAA Central Regional 1 Championship

JOPLIN, Mo. — Top seeded and fifth ranked Missouri Southern softball (51-7) secured a decisive 6–1 victory over No. 4 seed Southern Arkansas (48-9) Saturday at the Pat Lipira Softball Complex to capture the 2026 NCAA Division II Central Regional 1 Championship.

MSSU will now face three seed and 11th-ranked Central Oklahoma in the 2026 NCAA Division II Central Super Regional May 21-22 at Pat Lipira Softball Complex. UCO advanced through the 2026 NCAA Division II Central Regional 2 Championship held in Pittsburg, Kansas.

The Lions captured their third NCAA Regional title and first since 1992 (also won NCAA Regional title in 1990) when Southern captured the 1992 NCAA Division II National Championship. MSSU will compete and host its first-ever Super Regional next week.

MSSU now has an overall record of 51-7 in 2026 after winning its 15-straight game. The 51 wins in 2026 are the second-most wins in Missouri Southern softball program history, surpassing the 1992 season (50-7) and only trailing 2001 (52-12).

Head coach Hallie Blackney registered her 250th career victory at Missouri Southern. She ranks second all-time at MSSU behind Hall of Famer Pat Lipira (632-275, .697-win percentage, 1982-2000).

Missouri Southern tallied 12 hits and capitalized on three sacrifice flies to maintain control throughout the game Saturday.

Southern Arkansas made a push in the sixth inning, narrowing the gap to 5–1 with an RBI single from Payton Owens. MSSU responded in the bottom half to maintain control. Bailey Dillon's leadoff bunt single, followed by an advancement on an error, set the stage. Katie Gray's sacrifice fly brought Dillon home, securing the 6–1 lead.

Throughout the game, Missouri Southern capitalized on key opportunities. In the first, Dillon's aggressive baserunning led to the opening run after a single and two subsequent steals. Gray's timely hitting was crucial in the fourth inning, delivering a two-run single that expanded the lead. Maddie Rolfs also contributed with a pair of doubles, including an RBI double in the third.

The Muleriders struggled to find momentum against a steady defensive performance from the Lions, highlighted by a double play in the sixth, further stifling any chance of a comeback.

Dillon started strong for Missouri Southern in the first inning, singling and stealing second and third bases. Gray then flied out to center field, allowing Dillon to score, putting Missouri Southern up 1–0 after one inning.

In the second inning, Rolfs doubled and advanced to third on an error during a failed pickoff attempt. Easton Walter contributed with a sacrifice fly to bring Rolfs home. The score was 2–0 after two innings.

The third inning saw Carsen Tinkler singling and eventually scoring on a double by Rolfs, making it 3–0 after three innings.

In the fourth, the Lions capitalized on defensive errors from SAU. Micah Snider, pinch running for Walter, and Dillon both scored after a muffed throwing error, assisted by singles from Taylor Nuckolls and Gray. The score increased to 5–0 Lions after four innings.

The Muleriders managed to score in the sixth inning when Leigha Gilbert, running for Regan Dillon, scored on Owens' single, but the Lions responded in the bottom of the inning. Dillon singled and advanced on an error before Gray's sacrifice fly brought her home, making it 6–1 after six innings.

Bailey Dillon scored three runs with two hits and added two stolen bases, contributing significantly to the team's offense. Katie Gray drove in four runs, showcasing her effectiveness at the plate. Carsen Tinkler recorded three hits, bolstering the team's hitting performance.

Kiki Pickens delivered a strong performance for the Lions, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits. Pickens issued four walks but struck out three batters, throwing 93 pitches, 55 of which were strikes, and secured her 24th win of the season (24-3).

Emily Davis came in as a relief pitcher, throwing 1 1/3 innings with two walks, delivering 20 pitches with 10 strikes.

MSSU will now face three seed and 11th-ranked Central Oklahoma in the 2026 NCAA Division II Central Super Regional May 21-22 at Pat Lipira Softball Complex.
