KANSAS CITY, Mo. — No. 4 seeded Missouri Southern women's basketball (20-9) secured a 67-58 victory over No. 5 seeded Northwest Missouri State University (18-12) in the Quarterfinals of the 2026 MIAA Championships Friday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium.
With the victory, MSSU advances to the league tournament Semifinals on Saturday. The Lions will face top seeded Central Missouri Saturday at noon, CT.
MSSU returns to the 2026 MIAA Championships Semifinals for the first time since the 2022-23 season.
The Lions capitalized on a strong third quarter, outscoring the Bearcats 21-14, and maintained control with a 41-30 advantage on the boards. Northwest Missouri kept the game close with six 3-pointers but fell short in the final stretch.
Missouri Southern now has a record of 20-9 overall. NWMSU stands at 18-12 overall.
Nariah Clay scored 15 points and recorded six assists while adding eight rebounds.
Lilly Thomas tallied a career-best 23 points, hitting 9 of 11 free throws, and collected eight rebounds with three blocks.
Makenna Yokley added 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and grabbed four rebounds.
Grace Frazier made four steals and contributed six points with four rebounds.
The Lions began the first quarter by taking control early, as
Ashlyn Alloway scored consecutive baskets, including a layup assisted by Thomas. MSSU maintained pressure with Frazier contributing with both a steal and a jumper, pushing the score to 8-4.
Despite some resistance from NWMSU, Southern capitalized on second-chance opportunities, highlighted by a key offensive rebound and tip-in by Thomas, extending the lead to 15-10. The opening quarter concluded with Missouri Southern holding a 15-12 advantage, demonstrating strong rebounding efforts and maintaining a narrow lead.
MSSU opened the second quarter by maintaining its lead with Clay's jumper, assisted by
Camryn Smith. The team's resilience was evident as it consistently countered the Bearcats' efforts, including Clay's layup at 5:16 that kept MSSU ahead. Despite facing turnovers and fouls, Southern managed to regain momentum with Thomas contributing crucial points in the paint.
Towards the end of the second quarter, Southern's defense held strong, highlighted by Thomas's block at 1:01, preventing NWMSU from taking the lead. Frazier's late free throw allowed Southern to close the first half narrowly ahead, with a score of 29-28.
Southern began the third quarter with a strong defensive stance, highlighted by Smith's block at 9:31. This defensive momentum was followed by a series of successful shots, including layups by Smith and Clay, extending Southern's lead. Thomas contributed significantly by converting free throws and a layup, while Yokley added back-to-back 3-pointers, amplifying the scoring advantage.
As the quarter continued, Missouri Southern maintained control, responding promptly to NWMSU's attempts with timely defensive rebounds and continued offensive pressure. Clay's 3-pointer at 2:15 helped solidify the lead, and the stanza ended with Southern ahead 52-43 after three.
The Lions made a decisive push in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on free throws and defensive stops to maintain control. Clay hit a key 3-pointer early in the quarter, and Smith contributed with a crucial layup, pushing the lead. The Lions were efficient from the free-throw line, hitting 8 of 10 attempts, which helped extend their lead.
Thomas was instrumental with a block and two free throws at 1:30, further solidifying the MSSU advantage. Southern's defense restricted the Bearcats' scoring opportunities, allowing only one field goal in the final minute. The game closed with Southern leading 67-58, securing the win.
MSSU improves to 20-27 all-time at the MIAA Championship tournament (10-16 in quarterfinals). The Lions return to the Semifinals for the first time since the 2022-23 campaign, where they picked up a 75-61 win over Pittsburg State that season in the Quarterfinals (March 3, 2023) en route to the Tournament Championship.
The Lions next face top seeded Central Missouri in the 2026 MIAA Championship Semifinals Saturday at noon, CT. The MSSU men will also compete in the Semifinals with that tip set for 8:15 p.m., CT against the winner of No. 3 Rogers State and No. 6 Fort Hays State.
It marks the first time both Missouri Southern basketball programs are in the MIAA Championship Semifinals since the 2001-02 season.
MSSU will host team sendoffs for both Lion squads an hour and 45 minutes before both Lions game Saturday in the lobby of the Downtown Kansas City Marriott, 200 W 12th St. The women's team send-off is Saturday at 10:15 a.m. while the men's send-off is Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
