ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Missouri Southern State lost to Missouri Western 1-0 on Sunday. Missouri Southern generated six of its nine shots in the first half and finished with five shots on goal, but the Griffons scored the match's lone goal after halftime.
MSSU is 2-5-3 overall and 1-2-2 in conference play. Missouri Western is 6-2-4 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.
Talia Sanders put both of her shots on goal to lead the Lions in shots on frame.
Millie Robshaw-Charlesworth played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded two saves.
Samantha Glossup finished with two shots, including one on goal.
Sophie Spoonmore also tallied two shots and put one on frame.
Southern reached halftime in a scoreless match after withstanding four Griffons shots in the opening 13:07, including a save by Robshaw-Charlesworth on Magaly Lopez. The visitors then created a set-piece stretch, with
Talia Sanders and
Samantha Glossup putting shots on frame around corner kicks in the 13th and 17th minutes. From 20:11 to 34:54, the Lions kept pressing with four more shots, as Spoonmore, Sanders and
Ashley Chaput each forced saves from Morgan Byrd. The final minutes turned more physical, with MSSU whistled for four fouls from 36:51 to 43:37, but the half ended 0-0.
Missouri Southern kept the match scoreless through a physical opening stretch of the second half before Missouri Western broke through at 70:27, when Kendall Knisley scored with assists from Cadence Dobberstein and Ava Smith to make it 1-0. Earlier, Spoonmore put a shot high in the 48th minute, and Robshaw-Charlesworth saved Magaly Lopez's attempt in the 51st as the Lions handled a Griffons corner and multiple shots without conceding. Southern worked through four fouls and a yellow card between 48:01 and 62:36, then generated another look when
Daniela Marquez shot wide left at 66:12. After the goal, MSSU earned a corner in the 88th minute and
Samantha Glossup had the final shot at 90:00, but the Griffons held on for the 1-0 final.
