Atwater Nails 6-6 Three-Pointers in Narrow Loss to Pittsburg State

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Men's Basketball team hosted the Pittsburg State University Gorillas in a conference matchup. Isaiah Atwater drained eight three-pointers in the second half to tie the game, but the Gorillas surged in the final moments to secure an 83-75 victory over the Lions.

The Gorillas opened the game with a 7-0 run, but their momentum was halted by a contested three-pointer from Tyriqe Jackson three minutes in. Isaiah Atwater found Tyrone Wright open in the paint for a dunk, stopping a 4-0 run by Pittsburg State and bringing the score to 11-5 with 14:30 left in the first half. After trading baskets, Jamari Lawrence (jumper) and Jaden Taylor (back-to-back three-pointers) combined for an 8-0 Southern run to take their first lead of the night, 17-16, with 10:43 remaining.
 
Taylor sank a free throw to stop a 9-0 run by the Gorillas, cutting their lead to 25-18 with 6:30 remaining in the half. Pittsburg State answered with a scoring run before Atwater hit a fadeaway jumper just before the shot clock expired, making it 32-20 with 4:00 left until halftime. The Gorillas maintained their momentum, heading into the break with a 40-24 lead.

Martin Macenis hit a jumper, and Isaiah Atwater followed with back-to-back three-pointers to open the second half with an 8-0 run, trimming the Gorillas' lead to 40-32 just two minutes in. The Lions continued to convert from deep as Tyriqe Jackson and Atwater hit back-to-back three-pointers, answering a pair of layups from the Gorillas to trim their lead to 44-38 with 16:30 remaining. Southern maintained control in the second half as Atwater drained his fourth three-pointer, fueling a 12-6 run that tied the game at 50-50 with 12:23 remaining.
 
Both teams traded baskets over the following minutes, with Macenis scoring 10 points in just five minutes to tie the game at 62-62 with 7:08 remaining. Pittsburg State retained their lead with a 10-3 run, pushing the score to 72-65 with 2:30 remaining. Atwater drained his sixth three-pointer of the night, and the Lions fought hard, but Pittsburg State held on to claim the victory, 83-75.
