Wichita, Kan. – The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball team traveled to Wichita, Kan. to take on the Jets of Newman University in a conference matchup. A third quarter surge paved the way for the Jets to win over the Lions, 64-61.
Missouri Southern (11-6, 3-2 MIAA) vs. Newman (6-9, 1-5 MIAA)
Quarter 1: Missouri Southern 20 | Newman 17
Ryan Franklin scored the Lions' first three points, but the Jets held a 6-3 lead over the first three minutes of play.
Kennady Roach and Franklin added four points each in an 8-5 run for the Lions to tie the game at 11-11 with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter. Both teams traded baskets throughout the remaining minutes, but a three-pointer from
Morgan Meyers pushed the Lions ahead by three, 20-17, at the end of the first quarter.
Quarter 2: Missouri Southern 38 | Newman 24
The Lions' defense held the Jets scoreless over the first five minutes of the second quarter, forcing a pair of turnovers. The defensive showcase sparked an 11-0 run to give the Lions a 31-17 lead with 4:34 remaining in the quarter. Both teams scored seven points each over the remaining minutes, but
Ryan Franklin finished the first half with 19 points and seven rebounds as the Lions led 38-24 at halftime.
Quarter 3: Missouri Southern 45 | Newman 50
Ryan Franklin would surpass 20 points with a layup to open the third quarter. The Jets fought back into the game with an 18-1 run to regain the lead, 42-41, with 4:24 remaining in the third quarter. A pair of free throws from the Lions broke the Jets run, but the Jets continued to grow their lead to 49-43 with 1:31 remaining. The quarter would end in favor of the Jets, 50-45.
Quarter 4: Missouri Southern 61 | Newman 64
Ryan Franklin continued to dominate offensively, scoring eight points to cut into the deficit, 57-53, with 6:39 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Mackenzie Hart followed with a three-pointer, assisted by
Morgan Meyers, to cut the Jets' lead to one point, 57-56, with 5:49 remaining. The Jets would take advantage of the free throw line and score four straight points to bring their lead back to five with just over three minutes remaining in the game. The Lions returned with a 5-3 scoring advantage at the free throw line as they called a timeout down by three points, 64-61, with possession. The Jets would hold onto their lead as the game ended, 64-61.
