Southern Battles Back but Halted by Newman in Final Minutes

Wichita, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Men's Basketball team traveled to take on the Newman University Jets. The Lions opened the second half with an 11-2 rally, highlighted by three three-pointers from Tyrique Brooks, cutting the deficit. Southern mounted a comeback, trimming a 26-point halftime gap to just five points in the second half, but Newman held on to their lead and secured the win.

Half 1: Missouri Southern 22 | Newman 46 

The Jets jumped to a 5-0 lead before Tyriqe Jackson's 5-3 solo run narrowed the gap to 8-5 with 17:39 remaining. Newman answered with four straight points, but Tyrique Brooks stopped the surge with a jumper. Jaden Taylor added two free throws at the 11-minute mark to bring the score to 14-9. 

Both teams exchanged points before Newman went on a 12-point run, extending the score to 34-16 with 4:52 remaining. Brooks halted the momentum with a three-pointer at the 4:07 minute mark, for a 36-19 score. Moments later, Jamari Lawrence sank another three-pointer with 2:22 left. Newman responded by extending their lead to 46-22 at halftime. 
 

Half 2: Missouri Southern 65 | Newman 70 
The Lions stormed out of the locker room with an 11-2 run, fueled by three three-pointers from Tyrique Brooks and a layup from Martin Macenis, cutting the deficit to 50-36 with 15:08 left on the clock. Brooks added a layup at the 14:03 mark to bring the score to 52-38, but Newman countered with a six-point run, extending their lead with 10 minutes remaining. 
 

Layups by Tyriqe Jackson, Martin Macenis, and Ibn Loyal, along with a three-pointer from Isaiah Atwater and a jumper from Brooks, sparked a 10-4 run for the Lions, cutting the deficit to 64-53 with 5:08 remaining. The Lions continued to press the Jets, holding them scoreless for over three minutes. Southern responded with an 8-0 rally from Macenis, Jaden Taylor, and Jackson, closing the gap to five points with under a minute remaining. Newman held on to their lead and secured the 70-65 win.
