Pittsburg, Kan. - On a windy Saturday in April, the Missouri Southern track & field teams were in action at Pittsburg State. At the 16th Annual David Suenram Gorilla Classic, the Lions brought home seven event victories, another seven placed second, and 19 NCAA qualifying marks were hit.
Highlights of the day were the hurdles and discus, as nine NCAA marks were hit between the events, and
JaDarius Pigg set the school record in the 110m Hurdles.
The teams will compete next at the Midwest Classic hosted by Emporia State on April 11-13, and at the Mule Relays on April 12, hosted by Central Missouri.
Meet Results:
100m Hurdles
- Mya Ferguson won the event, running an NCAA qualifying time and personal record of 13.91sec. That time places her fourth on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Claire Cole ran the race in 16.04sec, placing 13th on the day.
110m Hurdles
- In the prelims, JaDarius Pigg shattered the MSSU record with a time of 13.56sec. He took 2nd in the finals with a time of 13.63sec, an NCAA qualifying mark. Malachi Pipkin was just behind that time, setting a personal record with an NCAA qualifying time of 13.68sec.
400m Hurdles
- JaDarius Pigg took 1st in the event, setting a personal record with an NCAA qualifying time of 53.00sec. That time ranks third on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list.
100m Dash
- Malachi Pipkin placed 6th in the prelims, running an NCAA qualifying time of 10.45sec, the third fastest time in MSSU outdoor history.
200m Dash
- Emma Hobbs placed 47th in the race, running a time of 26.84sec.

Discus
- Briar Gillum took 2nd on the day, recording an NCAA qualifying mark and personal record of 48.64m. That mark jumps her to fifth on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Kirsten Womack placed 4th in the event, throwing an NCAA qualifying mark of 46.01m. Aubrey Skinner tossed a distance of 37.78m for 18th place.
- Peyton Barton placed 2nd in the event with an NCAA qualifying throw of 56.14m, just a mere inch behind the victor. Cedric Pearson and Gabe Ford had NCAA qualifying marks as well, taking 5th and 7th respectively with throws of 52.81m and 51.97m.
Hammer Throw
- Briar Gillum took 3rd at the meet, tossing an NCAA qualifying mark of 54.53m. Kirsten Womack placed 7th with a throw of 49.44m, and Aubrey Skinner recorded a throw of 41.31m for 17th place.
- Peyton Barton won the event, upping his personal record with an NCAA qualifying throw of 66.91m, second best in MSSU outdoor history. Gabe Ford finished 6th with a throw of 54.92m.
High Jump
- Luke Brumit placed 4th at the meet, jumping an NCAA qualifying height of 2.08m. That jump ups him to seventh on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Brendan Jewell placed 5th, clearing a height of 2.02m.
- Lillian Hart placed 2nd in the open event, clearing a height of 1.57m. Claire Cole tied for 6th with a jump of 1.49m. Rylee Darnell took 12th in the invite event, jumping a height of 1.51m.
Long Jump
- Gabrielle McPherson placed 7th in the event, jumping a distance of 5.65m, placing her 8th on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Lillian Hart and Claire Cole went back-to-back at 18th and 19th, jumping marks of 5.06m and 5.00m.
- Caleb Manning finished 3rd with an NCAA qualifying jump of 7.35m, the 7th best mark in MSSU outdoor history. Devin Greene took 9th with a jump of 6.95m, and Peyton McBride jumped a distance of 6.82m for 12th place.
Pole Vault
- Bastien Franck took 2nd in the event, clearing an NCAA qualifying mark of 5.16m, fifth on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Travis Greenfield also cleared an NCAA qualifying height, taking 8th with a jump of 4.86m.
- Katie Candrl and Abby Hobbs both jumped a height of 3.56m at the meet, but Candrl took 5th after clearing it on her first attempt and Hobbs placed 6th clearing it on her second attempt. Emma Hobbs and Alyssa Jerome tied for 8th place, jumping a height of 3.21m.
Shot Put
- Briar Gillum took 5th with a throw of 13.49m, and Kirsten Womack recorded a toss of 11.27m for 17th place.
- Cedric Pearson won the event, recording an NCAA qualifying mark and personal record throw of 18.07m. Gabe Ford also threw an NCAA qualifying distance, taking 5th with a throw of 16.98m.
Triple Jump
- Lillian Hart took 7th in the event, jumping a distance of 11.10m.
- Caleb Manning placed 1st at the meet, jumping an NCAA qualifying distance of 15.14m. That mark puts him sixth on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Peyton McBride recorded a jump of 13.66m, placing him 8th on the day. Devin Greene finished 16th, jumping a distance of 13.05m.
