MSSU Records 26 NCAA Qualifying Marks Over Three Meets

Joplin, Mo. - It was a busy Friday for the Missouri Southern track & field teams, as the Lions were at three separate locations. Two distance runners were in Azusa, California for the Bryan Clay Invitational, a group of throwers were at the Mule Relays hosted by Central Missouri, and a majority of the team was at the ESU Midwest Classic.    

On the day, Missouri Southern had 26 NCAA qualifying marks, taking home nine victories in the process. One of those victories was a program record, Peyton Barton re-writing the record books in the Hammer Throw. 

Next week, the Lion track & field teams will start at the John McDonnell Invitational hosted by Arkansas on Thursday and Friday, then they'll compete at the Pittsburg State University Tune-Up on Saturday.  

Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational Meet Results:
5000m Run
  • Jayna Gunter and Riley Vickrey both set personal records, placing their names on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Gunter placed 47th, running the race in 17:11.84 which ranks fifth on the program's top-10 list. Vickrey ran a time of 17:23.88 for 62nd place, tenth best in MSSU outdoor history. 

Central Missouri's Mule Relays Meet Results:
Discus
  • Peyton Barton took 2nd in the event, throwing an NCAA qualifying mark of 56.33m. Gabe Ford finished 3rd, also hitting an NCAA mark at 55.62m. That throw ranks fifth on the MSSU top-10 list. 
  • Kirsten Womack and Briar Gillum went back-to-back at 5th and 6th, both recording NCAA qualifying throws. Womack tossed a distance of 46.83m and Gillum threw 46.75m. Aubrey Skinner took 21st, throwing a mark of 38.34m. 

Hammer Throw
  • Peyton Barton took over as the program's record holder, taking 1st at the meet with a school record toss of 68.09m, the best mark in NCAA Division II this season. Connor Boyd placed 3rd with an NCAA qualifying throw of 61.44m, and Gabe Ford threw an NCAA qualifying distance of 57.78m for 7th place. 
  • Briar Gillum placed 2nd, tossing an NCAA qualifying mark of 54.74m. Kirsten Womack took 5th with an NCAA qualifying throw of 53.24m, placing her eighth on the MSSU top-10 list. Aubrey Skinner threw a distance of 37.67m for 30th place.

Shot Put
  • Briar Gillum took 4th in the event, throwing an NCAA qualifying distance of 14.04m. Mona Keita took 5th with a toss of 13.57m, placing her tenth on the MSSU outdoor list. Kirsten Womack recorded a throw of 12.10m, good for 11th place. 
  • Gabe Ford placed 9th in the event, recording a throw of 15.80m.

Emporia State's Midwest Classic Meet Results:
100m Hurdles
  • Mya Ferguson took 1st in the race, running a time of 14.50sec. Clarie Cole took 4th with a time of 16.45sec. 

110m Hurdles
  • JaDarius Pigg won the prelims with an NCAA qualifying time of 14.06sec, but did not score in the finals.

400m Hurdles
  • JaDarius Pigg took 3rd in the race, improving his personal record to 52.64 which is still third best in MSSU history. 

100m Dash
200m Dash
  • Malachi Pipkin placed 4th in the race, running a time of 21.40 to jump to fourth on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. 

800m Run
1500m Run
  • Isabella Frost was the first Lion to finish, completing the race in 4:57.30 for 5th place. Shelby Kihega took 8th at 5:07.10, and Riley Hawkins finished 16th with a time of 5:20.59. 
  • Geordan Patrylak took 2nd in the race, cracking the MSSU outdoor top-10 with a time of 3:54.01. Jaden Deaton ran the race in 3:56.09, earning him 6th at the meet.

3000m Steeplechase 
5000m Run
  • Kyla Weems placed 3rd, running the race in 18:31.31. Hailey Nelson and Zoe Nelson went back-to-back with finishes of 5th and 6th, running times of 18:55.23 and 19:33.19.
  • Zachary Finley ran the race in 15:38.88, taking 10th place in the race. 

4x100m Relay
Discus
  • Cedric Pearson took 1st at the meet, recording an NCAA qualifying throw of 51.12m.

High Jump
  • Rylee Darnell and Lillian Hart went back to back with 3rd and 4th place finishes. Both jumped a height of 1.59m. Claire Cole took 11th with a jump of 1.49m. 
  • Luke Brumit improved his personal best once again, taking 4th with an NCAA qualifying jump of 2.10m. That jump places him sixth on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Brendan Jewell placed 7th after clearing a height of 1.95m. 

Javelin
  • Garrett Strange placed 2nd in the event, recording an NCAA qualifying toss of 68.08m. That mark ranks fifth on the MSSU top-10 list. Brendan Rozier finished 3rd, recording an NCAA qualifying throw of 67.77m. Clifton Bridgewater took 8th also with an NCAA qualifying throw at 59.47m, and Ethan Dias placed 13th at 53.50m. 
  • Keilee Johnson won the event, throwing an NCAA qualifying mark of 47.08m. Adrianne Casey placed 2nd with an NCAA qualifying throw of 44.66m, putting her seventh on the MSSU top-10 list. Mackenzie Mayer threw a distance of 41.49m, taking 5th on the day. 

Long Jump
  • Lillian Hart took 3rd in the event, jumping a distance of 5.16m. Claire Cole and Sidney Batten went back-to-back at 6th and 7th, jumping marks of 4.87m and 4.74m.
  • Caleb Manning won the event with an NCAA qualifying jump of 7.48m, good for fifth on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Peyton McBride placed 6th with a mark of 6.74m, and Devin Greene jumped a distance of 5.98m for 17th place. 

Pole Vault
  • Bastien Franck won the event with an NCAA qualifying jump of 5.18m, placing him fourth on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Travis Greenfield took 2nd with a height of 4.78m. 
  • Mackenzie Moring took home a 1st place finish, jumping an NCAA qualifying height of 3.91m, placing her seventh on the MSSU outdoor top-10 list. Katie Candrl finished 2nd with a jump of 3.76m. Abby Hobbs jumped a height of 3.46m for 8th, Emma Hobbs took 10th with a jump of 3.31m, and Alyssa Jerome finished 12th at 3.31m.  

Shot Put
  • Cedric Pearson took 1st in the event, throwing a personal record and NCAA qualifying mark of 18.18m. 
  • Samariae Bonds won the event, tossing an NCAA qualifying mark of 15.27m. 

Triple Jump
  • Lillian Hart took 2nd at the meet, jumping a distance of 10.94m. 
  • Taris Jackson won the event, jumping an NCAA qualifying distance of 15.13m. Caleb Manning placed 2nd with an NCAA qualifying mark of 14.91m.
