Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern baseball team was back home Friday evening after a five game road streak. Visiting Joplin was the Ichabods of Washburn, entering the series with a 15-10 (9-4 MIAA) record. The Lions claimed game one with a score of 3-0, boosting Missouri Southern's record to 25-5 (12-2 MIAA) on the year.
The Lions faced a bit of trouble in the first, but got out of it without giving up a run.
Henry Kusiak hit a single down the left field line for the game's first hit, but the Ichabods kept the score 0-0. A similar story happened in the third,
Tyler Ferguson driving one through the left side, but again the Ichabods got out of it unscathed.
With one out in the fourth,
Will Doherty drew a walk and later advanced on a wild pitch. After another out was recorded,
Wyatt Morgan broke the scoreless tie to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. They plated two more in the fifth, as Doherty drove in
Chayton Beck with a single to right.
Treghan Parker drove in the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly, scoring
Drew Townsend.
Things went fast for the remainder of the game, as
Cole Gayman recorded another quality start.
Kyle Moore came in for the ninth inning, retiring the first two via the strikeout. The third Ichabod batter poked one down the left field line, but
Treghan Parker threw him out as he tried to stretch it to a double, ending the contest 3-0 in favor of MSSU.
Cole Gayman recorded his seventh win of the year, going 8.0 scoreless innings. He struck out 7 in the process, giving up just 3 hits and 2 walks. That was also save number five for
Kyle Moore, recording another pair of strikeouts in 1.0 inning.
Henry Kusiak was 2-3 with the team's only extra base hit, also drawing a walk in the game.
Will Doherty went 1-3, driving in a run and scoring another.
Wyatt Morgan and
Treghan Parker drove in the other runs.
Game two of the series will take place on Saturday, March 22 with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00pm.
